General Manager, Mayo Okunola, DStv Mobile (Nigeria, Ghana) has revealed that DStv Mobile has spent over $100 million on its investment in the countries where they operate with Nigeria taking the chunk of the investment.

Speaking at the October 2010 Breakfast forum of the Nigerian-South African Chamber of Commerce sponsored by Multichoice Nigeria, Okunola stated that the essence of Dstv mobile is to explore broadcast television on the mobile phone.Dstv Mobile has over 22 sites because there is a good chunk of transmitting infrastructure in Nigeria ‘‘which are more than we have in most of the countries that we are in for the past 3 to 4 years. The Nigerian market of about 150 million people is a substantial investment destination for us.’’

Multichoice Nigeria, a broadcast company with television through satellite, web, mobile and high definition television, provides a broad spectrum of entertainment and information that offers customers various services to suit their taste.

The countries where the company recently introduced DStv Mobile, a brand of Multichoice are Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya and Namibia.

Okunola said Dstv Mobile has probably spent all it needed to spend for now but in the future; ‘‘we will roll out based on customer needs, as we see the business growing, we will add more transmission distribution sites. But it might not be correct to put numbers on that again because there are a number of
incremental costs that kicks in.’’

He further revealed that Multichoice commenced operation in Nigeria just on three analogue channels but because it is technologically driven, it has succeeded in witnessing remarkable development by establishing DStv, Supersport, DMTV and next generation decoder.

The introduction of various brands of Multichoice has greatly brought a change in the phase of entertainment in Africa and in its competitive environment.

In another development, Felix Awogu, General Manager, SuperSport, a brand of Multichoice Nigeria added that SuperSport is a market leader in content provision, and has in no small measure served as a promoter of sports in Nigeria thereby creating viewership growth and loyalty to the channel.

Supersport according to him has also been committed to the increment of content output by showing live matches to its diverse audience, and launches channel dedicated to Nigeria Football League content– NFL TV.

He said there is an innovation that is based on Supersport program , ‘‘all matches will now have local commentary; studio now hosted from Nigeria with Nigerian Presenters, guests and crew coupled with weekly focus on history of the leagues – great teams and players of the past and this will further create sense of pride and continuity in fans/viewers.’’

Also at the forum, Dr. Ebun Sonaiya, Joint Medical Director, Total Health Limited, also an exco member of the Chamber thanked the guest speakers for their well delivered presentations and said that for every body to patronize the Dstv mobile prices must be reduced to make affordable to more Nigerians.
